The Shōya House Approaches Its Grand Opening!

JAMA provided structural engineering and design services for relocating the existing Yokoi House from Marugame, Japan to its new home at Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.

The existing structure is 3,000 square feet and was constructed approximately 320 years ago. The structure features mortise and tenon carpentry techniques, and many of the feature elements are natural wood trunks and branches. JAMA worked with architects in Japan and the US to discreetly introduce new wood shear walls, hold downs, and foundations throughout the structure, all while maintaining the cultural and architectural integrity. The structure has been designed for public occupancy and seismic forces.

The Japanese Heritage Shōya House opens to the public in October!
