Additionally, JAMA has always placed a strong emphasis on staff development and future employee cultivation, and the firm continues that tradition through its internship program. Paid summer internships are offered in our Los Angeles and Oakland offices to undergraduate- and graduate-level engineering students. The program emphasizes:

    • Introduction to all phases of a building’s development from schematic design and design development to construction documents and construction administration 
    • Structural design across a variety of materials including timber, masonry, steel, and concrete
    • Application of structural theory to real-world design 
    • Use and interpretation of building codes and standards such as CBC, ACI, AISC, NDS, ASCE7 and ASCE41 
    • Practical use of design and analysis software packages such as SAP2000, ETABS, SAFE, RISA, Enercalc, and Mathcad, among others 
    • Greater understanding of structural concepts such as load paths and load transfers 
    • Exposure to real-world projects and construction practices through site visits 
    • Understanding of project management processes such as RFIs and submittal packages for current projects

Project Engineer

Minimum Requirements:

  • MS in Civil or Structural Engineering required. Transcripts and references will be requested.
  • Excellent problem solving skills, communication skills, and able to work well with others.
  • Able to multi-task assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate advanced level of proficiency (or at least 2+ years of experience) in structural engineering design, planning, and technical analysis working under guidance of senior engineer(s).
  • Experience with small to mid-sized buildings including new construction, renovations, and seismic upgrades a plus.
  • Detailing experience with various structural systems including gravity and lateral framing.
  • Proficient with industry software such as ETABS, SAFE, RAM, and RISA. Others a plus.
  • Proficient with IBC, CBC, ASCE 7, ACI-318, and AISC-341. Knowledge of ASCE-41 a plus.
  • Knowledge of NDS. Mass Timber is a plus.
  • General programming or knowledge in Grasshopper/Rhino is a plus.
  • Special consideration given to those who have more than 2 years of experience with either DSA and/or OSHPD including proven experience handling plan check and construction phases.

Structural Design Engineer

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS in Civil or Architectural/Structural Engineering required; MS and EIT a plus. Transcripts and references will be requested.
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn, good communicator, and resourceful.
  • Able to work independently or in a group setting. Willingness to be mentored by others.
  • Either prior experience (basic proficiency) with or ability to learn structural engineering design, planning, and analysis, including analysis and design software and application to project specific needs under guidance of licensed senior engineer(s).
  • Proven excellence in University coursework related to structural analysis and behavior of building structures; Building code application and performance based design a plus.
  • Proven excellence in University coursework related to concrete and steel design; PT concrete, wood and masonry a plus.
  • General programming or knowledge in Grasshopper/Rhino is a plus.
  • Special consideration to those who have interned in a Structural Engineering office and have experience with analysis and design of buildings using the California Building Code and ASCE 7
