This Voluntary Seismic Improvement (VSI) completed at Eisenhower Medical Center’s Ike Wing preserves the minimalist aesthetics of the structure’s mid-century modern architecture while dramatically improving seismic performance.
Addressing structural and life-safety deficiencies in a cost-effective, non-obtrusive way that allowed continuous operation throughout involved tying three seismically separate structures together. Seismic joints on either side of the central structure were removed and then “taped” with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), and steel drag plates were added across into the two flanking structures. These measures raised the structural performance of the project to the standards of OSHPD and California’s SB1953.
